5. Legend of the Galactic Heroes: Die Neue These
This spectacular show will take you into a fascinating dimension of the future, far across the galaxy, where the human race has established a new community. It plays out a generational rivalry between two major forces: The Galactic Empire, an autocratic regime inspired by 19th century Prussia, and the Free Planets Alliance, a democracy that endorses capitalism.
This rivalry is played out in a series of war and the accounts of two young military masterminds: Yang Wen-li from the Free Planets Alliance and Reinhard von Lohengramm from the Galactic Empire. Both these military geniuses are the main protagonists and there is a powerfully dramatic rivalry. Since both the characters are equally charismatic, you can pick the antagonist according to your own preference.
Reinhard is striving to accumulate sufficient power within the Galactic Empire so he can overthrow the corrupt Kaiser and alter the history of the regime. Yang, on the other hand, dreamt of being a historian and joined the army simply to find a way to pay for his education. However, due to his great talent for strategizing and calm demeanour in chaos, he was constantly relied upon in the military.
Those who consider it a dry and boring military series will be shocked beyond belief because it does a wonderful job of playing out the politics and strategizing that take place in war, and how the entire idea of going to war is utterly pointless. It provides a bigger view of the picture with a splendid plot that will brim you up with fascinating contextual information to understand the reasons behind the decisions taken by Reinhard and Yang.
Some of the scenes, such as the war debate held by the governing body of the Free Planets Alliance where the majority takes the decision to go ahead with the upcoming election campaign to serve as a distraction, are utterly fabulous and delightful. They provide a great deal of context and engross the viewers by explaining how these decisions rest on the actions of Yang, and the orders he has received from his superiors, all of which prove to be a mighty challenge in the larger picture of affairs. Needless to say, it is an engrossing tale filled with political intrigued and war drama.
6. Devilman Crybaby
Masaaki Yuasa, the animation director behind Devilman Crybaby, has been thrown into the limelight with his perfectly harnessed skills. Before being associated with the Devilman series, he was an anime director who created that amazing episode on food chain for Adventure Time. On look at the teaser is enough to reveal what a terrific job he has done.
The animation is utterly amazing, and you will find the show immensely engrossing. The series portrays violence and sex to highlight the appalling human characteristics of over-indulgence and selfish disregard for the rights of others. Violence and sex are the two recurring themes of the series that have been exploited to entice the audience and keep the viewers constantly guessing.
One moment the story would revolve around shots of naked breasts or crass humour, and suddenly, the story will take a shocking turn with the emergence of a deadly demon. Blood is spilled throughout the series, and the shockingly genuine portrayal of human traits of cruelty and violence are played out with an unpredictability that plays with the expectations of the audience and keeps them hooked.
The series also introduces us to some memorable and subtle moments that speak volumes about the state of human nature and the concept of humanity. It is a powerful show and deserves to be watched!
